How to connect Coach Leo to Claude

Claude can hold a great conversation about running, but it can't see your training. Connect Coach Leo and it can: your Strava-synced history, your plan, your paces and how you've been feeling become available to Claude through eleven coaching tools, via the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Setup takes about two minutes and works on every Claude plan.

The short answer

In Claude, open Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, paste https://mcp.coachleo.ai/mcp, leave the advanced OAuth fields empty, and sign in with your Coach Leo account when Claude asks. Custom connectors are available on every Claude plan — free accounts can add one, which is all you need. A free Coach Leo account is enough to get your briefing and a first training plan.

What you need

  • A Claude account, on any plan. Custom connectors are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise; free accounts are limited to one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise, only an organization Owner can add it.
  • A Coach Leo account, free to create at coachleo.ai, with your Strava, Suunto or Polar connected so Leo has real training data to coach from.
  • Nothing to install. The connector is a remote MCP server — it works in Claude on the web, in the desktop app and in the mobile apps, and stays in sync across all of them.

Step-by-step setup

Server URL

https://mcp.coachleo.ai/mcp
  1. 1

    Open the connector settings

In Claude (claude.ai or the desktop app), open Settings, then Connectors.

  2. 2

    Add a custom connector

Click Add custom connector. Name it Coach Leo and paste the server URL: https://mcp.coachleo.ai/mcp

  3. 3

    Skip the advanced fields

Leave the optional OAuth client ID and secret empty. Coach Leo handles authentication itself, through a standard OAuth sign-in on the first connection.

  4. 4

    Sign in to Coach Leo

Claude opens a coachleo.ai page asking you to sign in and authorize the connection. Use your Coach Leo account, or create one — it's free.

  5. 5

Enable Coach Leo in a chat

Back in Claude, make sure the Coach Leo connector is enabled for your conversation, then ask something like: "Give me my coaching briefing."

What you can do once connected

Once authorized, Claude can call Coach Leo's coaching tools on your behalf. In practice, that means you can:

  • Get your coaching briefing — recent runs, training load, personalized heart-rate zones, today's session and how the week is going.
  • Ask about any run: "How was my long run on Sunday compared to two weeks ago?" Leo reads the actual data, not your recollection of it.
  • Create a training plan built from your real paces — a free Coach Leo account includes a first plan.
  • Log how you feel (fatigue, sleep, aches) so readiness is judged on your feel, not on wearable scores.
  • Ask for race-time predictions, shoe mileage tracking, or answers from Leo's scientific knowledge base of peer-reviewed running research.

It's the same Leo you'd talk to in the Coach Leo web app or on Telegram — same memory, same data, same coach. Claude simply becomes one more place to reach him. For the full list of tools and the technical details of the MCP server, see the documentation.

What's free and what isn't

Connecting Coach Leo to Claude is free: any signed-in Coach Leo account can authorize the connector, and a free account gets the coaching briefing, questions about your training, and a first training plan. Ongoing adaptive coaching — the plan that reshapes itself every week around what you actually ran and how you felt — is part of the Coach Leo subscription, which you manage at coachleo.ai. On the Claude side, no paid plan is required for this connector.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a paid Claude plan (Pro or Max) to add Coach Leo?

No. Anthropic opened custom connectors to every plan: Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Free accounts are limited to one custom connector — which is all Coach Leo needs. On Team and Enterprise plans, an organization Owner has to add the connector for the workspace.

Is Coach Leo in Claude's connector directory?

Not yet — that's why you add it as a custom connector. The integration itself is identical: a custom connector uses the same MCP protocol and the same OAuth sign-in as a directory one.

What data does Claude get access to?

Only what Coach Leo's tools return, and only after you explicitly authorize the connection with your own Coach Leo sign-in. Claude never gets your Strava credentials — it talks to Coach Leo, which holds the data. You can revoke the connection at any time by removing the connector in Claude.

Does it work in the Claude desktop and mobile apps?

Yes. A remote connector added to your Claude account is available across Claude clients — claude.ai in the browser, the desktop app and the mobile apps.

Claude says the connection failed or asks for authentication settings. What do I do?

Check the URL is exactly https://mcp.coachleo.ai/mcp and leave the optional OAuth client fields empty — Coach Leo announces its own OAuth flow and Claude will open the sign-in page for you. If the sign-in page never appears, remove the connector and add it again.

Can I use Coach Leo with ChatGPT instead?

Yes — Coach Leo is published in the ChatGPT plugin directory, so setup there is even shorter. Both connections can coexist: it's the same coach and the same memory behind them.
