Full-Distance Triathlon — Training plan

A day, not a race. Everything that matters here is decided by patience: the bike ridden slower than you can, and the fuelling rehearsed until it is boring.

The short answer

The floor is three swims and three rides a week, plus two to four runs. If you already ride or swim four times a week, Leo keeps four — but never more, and never more than ten sessions across the week. A number of sessions you tell Leo you can do is treated as a hard limit on your life, not as an opening offer.

The legs of the race

These are the standard distances of the format. When the event you name has a course of its own, Leo reads its legs instead and sizes the plan on those — the standard distances are the fallback, not the rule.

No discipline goes beyond 4 sessions a week and the week never exceeds 10. If you tell Leo how many sessions your life allows, that number wins over everything above: the disciplines your race actually contains are simply served first.

Who this format is for

Athletes with a half distance behind them and a life that can absorb a long ride most weekends for several months. The limiting factor is almost never fitness — it is available hours, and honesty about them.

How the bike is written

A full-distance bike leg is an endurance effort, and it stays one. The key rides are written in the aerobic range and they are not secretly threshold sessions in disguise: riding the bike leg a zone too hard is how the marathon that follows turns into a walk. That constraint is in the plan, not only in the advice.

The long ride

The long ride is the session the whole block is built around, and its ceiling is the highest of any format. Leo still refuses to get there in one leap: it starts from your own longest recent ride and adds at most a quarter at a time, week after week, until the ceiling is reached.

Where the bricks sit

The long ride becomes a brick every other week through the block and every week across the closing eight, with the longest run off the bike of any format. It is a fuelling rehearsal as much as a running one, and the run part stays at the easy end of its band — you are practising the day, not racing it.

The swim, in metres

Three swims a week, because the volume of a long-distance swim leg is carried by frequency rather than by one heroic session. With a critical swim speed on file the sets get real targets per 100 m; without it Leo prescribes steady aerobic work and puts the two-distance test in the plan.

The last weeks

The deepest taper of the four formats, spread over the last weeks: volume falls a long way in all three sports, the long ride loses a large part of its length, the bricks stop, and what is kept is short and specific. The aim is to arrive recovered rather than to arrive having trained as much as possible.

What you need

A watch that records the three sports and takes structured sessions, pool access several times a week, and a bike set up for long hours. A power meter is optional and genuinely useful here, because the whole race depends on holding an effort you cannot feel drifting.

What this plan will not tell you

Leo does not estimate an overall triathlon time, and it will not on this page either. Projecting a finish across three disciplines, two transitions, a course profile and the conditions of the day is a different job, and we would rather leave the box empty than hand you a number you would pace your race off. Leo also does not model your cycling power without a power meter, and does not coach your swim technique from a video.

Frequently asked questions

What are the distances of a full-distance triathlon?

3.8 km / 180 km / 42.2 km: 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km on the bike and 42.2 km of running. If your event has a course of its own, Leo sizes the plan on its real legs rather than on these.

How many sessions a week does Leo plan?

At least 3 swims and 3 rides, plus 2–4 runs taken from your history. No discipline goes beyond 4 sessions and the week never exceeds 10.

Do I need a power meter?

No. Without an FTP your rides are prescribed by heart-rate zone and effort, accounting for the fact that cycling heart rates run lower than running ones. Give Leo an FTP and the same sessions come back in watts.

Does Leo give a predicted finish time?

No. Race projections exist for running distances only. Leo projects neither an overall triathlon time nor per-leg splits.

Do I need a full-distance race before this one?

No, but a half distance first is the sensible route: it is where you find out whether your fuelling works and how your run holds up after a long ride, at a cost your body can pay twice.

How does Leo handle a week where I miss sessions?

It reads what you actually did, in all three sports, and decides the next week from that rather than from the week it had planned. A missed long ride is not silently rescheduled on top of the following one.

There is no generic plan to download here

Everything above describes how Leo builds the block, not a fixed grid of weeks. The long ride starts from your own longest recent ride, the run frequency comes from your history, and the swim targets appear once you have a critical speed on file. A grid printed on a web page would know none of that.

Put your race in the calendar

Connect your training, name the race, and Leo sizes the block on its legs and writes the swims, the rides and the runs around it — then adjusts every week from what you actually did.
