Coach Leo and Apple Health

Apple Health is the health store on your iPhone that your Apple Watch, your phone and most fitness apps already write into. Coach Leo can read your workout history straight out of it, inside the iOS app — nothing to authorise on a website, no account to link, and the data never travels through a third-party service to get to Leo. It is the simplest route for a runner whose training already lives on an Apple Watch.

Apple Health

Read-only, on device

What you needThe Coach Leo app on iOS. Apple Health is Apple's health data layer — the store your Apple Watch and iPhone already write to.

What Leo reads

  • Your recorded workouts: type, duration, distance and heart rate
  • Only the categories you tick on Apple's own permission screen — you grant them one by one

How the sync works

On demand from the iOS app, reading whatever Apple Health holds at that moment. Because the read happens on your phone, it works even for workouts that never reached any online service.

What it does not do

  • iOS app only. On the web or on Android this source does not exist — the Android equivalent is Health Connect.
  • Read-only. Coach Leo does not write workouts, plans or any other record back into Apple Health.
  • It occupies the same single source slot as Strava, Suunto and Polar, because a health store is fed by the same watch and would duplicate the same runs.

One source at a time

Leo reads one activity source at a time. Strava, Suunto, Polar and your phone's health store all carry the same workouts — a health store is fed by the same watch — so connecting a second one would duplicate every outing and leave you unable to tell which source Leo is actually reading. Switching sources takes two clicks on your connections page.

Your data

Permissions are granted and withdrawn in Apple's own Health settings, per data category, and Coach Leo can only read what you have ticked. Health data is never used for advertising and is never sold.

Your data, already in sync.

Coach Leo starts from the runs you have actually done — not from a questionnaire. Connect your source and get a plan built on your real training.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Strava if I use Apple Health?

No. Apple Health can be your activity source on its own. Bear in mind it takes the single source slot, so you would use it instead of Strava rather than alongside it.

Does Coach Leo write anything into Apple Health?

No. The integration reads only. Nothing Leo produces is written back into the health store.

Can Coach Leo send a workout to my Apple Watch?

Not yet. Reading from Apple Health is available today; sending a planned session to the Apple Watch Workout app is still in testing and is not open to everyone. Suunto is the source where session push works today.
